Andrew and Dennis kick off this month’s Treetopia’s Colors of Love! As one of the most fabulous holiday enthusiasts out there, they’ve made a splash with their eye-catching DIY décor and colorful crafting ideas. They’re also strong role models in advocating acceptance for the LGBTQ community—blazing a trail of inspiration and fun for fans and supporters alike. We’ve asked them a couple of questions about how they express themselves online and within their family. Read on to hear their story.

How do you express yourself online through social media?

“We express ourselves on social media by being true to who we are and doing what we love. We let people into our everyday lives and hopefully inspire people to, ironically, get off their phones, get creative and expressive with their hands through crafting!”

What are some of the feedback that you’ve gotten in regards to how you express yourself?

“Luckily, most of our feedback has been super positive! There are always some haters, but the love we receive is overwhelming! When starting our blog we were trying to pinpoint our audience, but came to find out that we had a wide range of followers…fellow New Yorkers, other members of the gay community, suburban moms, dads, grandmothers, and even kids! We realized what everyone was looking for wasn’t that perfect picture or project, it was really just us. People were interested in who we were, what makes us happy and how we live our day to day lives. We have connected with so many incredible people and love following along their journeys as well!”

How involved are you in the LGBTQ community?

“We try to give back to the community as much as we can, but always feel like we want to do more! We’re loyal fans of RuPaul’s Drag Race and watch every Thursday with take-out, cocktails and our close friends. We had a craft night with the LGBTQA students at Pace University and were overwhelmed with how loving and awesome they all were. This month to kick off Pride we will be doing a craft event to raise money for the Queens Center for Gay Seniors at The Queens Craft Brigade here in Astoria!”

Whats your favorite thing about the LGBTQ community?

“Our favorite thing about the LGBTQ community is family. You get to choose your family in our community. So many people live fearless lives after having to grow up struggling with acceptance within themselves and with others. It’s important to us to be able to set an example for the youth. No matter what race, gender or lifestyle you can live a happy, loving and fulfilled life.”

Name one misconception about the community that you wish to change.

“A misconception about the community is that people think we all know each other and get along. Sadly, you can even feel like an outsider in your own community. We all come from an insecure beginning and sometimes we forget that. We could all learn to accept each other.”

“My idea of a perfect world is one in which we really appreciated each others differences: Short, tall; Democrat, Republican; black, white; gay, straight-a wold in which all of us are equal, but definitely not the same.” Barbara Streisand
