From Elsa Schiaparelli’s 1937 lobster dress to Lady Gaga’s iconic meat dress, food has long been a visual treasure trove for designers hungry for inspiration. Lately, fashion shows have been a smorgasbord of culinary-oriented clothing and accessories, with Moschino serving up fast-food styled dresses and Kate Spade models toting bags shaped like Chinese take-out containers.
With this year’s Fashion Week series behind us, we think it’s time for a little tasty turnabout. Blame it on our inner foodie, but many catwalk creations remind us a lot our favorite food. If our previous Fashion Week articles gave you a hankering to throw a Project:Runway-themed party of your own, here are the perfect dishes and drinks to include on your menu.
The Design: This broken vase floral evening gown from Carolina Herrera’s Spring 2015 collection is a stunning example of the delicately elegant style the veteran designer is renowned for.
The Dish: The beautiful rose and leaf print of Carolina Herrera’s dress gave us a craving for delicious Russian blinis. Made with thin buckwheat pancakes and crème Fraiche topped with warm smoked salmon rosettes, dill, and caviar, these classic canapés will wow your guests from the get-go.
The Design: Ellie Saab enchanted the Paris Fashion Week crowd with this exquisite, ombre-inspired evening gown from her 2014 fall line.
The Drink: First concocted at The Bayona restaurant in New Orleans, the Stormy Morning cocktail has a monochromatic purple color that calls to mind Ellie Saab’s dreamy design. The main ingredient in this dramatic drink is Crème de Violette, a floral-scented liqueur that slowly swirls and settles as you pour in the Champagne.
The Design: Accented with a warm and luxurious fur stole, this all-white ensemble has a simple, fresh, and clean look that was characteristic of Mathieu Mirano’s entire Fall 2014 Ready-To-Wear Collection.
The Dish: A blend of plump clams, potatoes, spices, and cream, New England clam chowder makes a thoroughly satisfying starter. Skip the canned version, and cook it yourself with this super-easy recipe. Serve this thick and hearty soup in white ramekins to emulate Mirano’s chic, stark style.
The Design: Ralph Lauren brought a casual spirit and sporty chic to New York Fashion Week. His 2015 Spring Collection was punctuated by this full yellow tulle skirt, sage safari shirt, and a bronze belt.
The Dish: The lovely colors of this Ralph Lauren creation had our mouths watering for rich, decadent crème brulee. With a smooth custard base and a crisp caramelized shell, this dessert is tasty and incredibly easy to make. Just before serving, sprinkle on granulated sugar and caramelize the top with a kitchen torch in front of your friends. Very fun and very impressive!
At your next dinner party, indulge your appetite for couture and cuisine with dishes inspired by the most stylish designs the fashion industry has to offer.
