Give yourself and your girlfriends a meaningful visual treat by hosting a movie night about empowered women on Women’s Equality Day on August 26

Women’s Equality Day may be a celebration of when women were allowed to vote in America, but that doesn’t mean you can’t celebrate women empowerment in other ways. Get your girlfriends together to celebrate girl power by having a women-themed movie night. Treetopia identifies the women of strength and character in these film selections you may want to screen at your viewing party:

Women of Strength and Integrity

With the rise of independent women in this century, it’s not hard to attest to the strength of women. However, in a world of oppression, will there still be women who will remain vigilant in their respect for life and moral beliefs? This is what Katniss Everdeen proves in the film, The Hunger Games. Watch how she defines and remains true to herself despite the odds (and look good while she’s at it!). May the odds be ever in your favor.

Women of the Work Force

Are you a true, present-day empowered working woman or have been raised by one? Made in Dagenham depicts a time when women went home with a significantly lower amount of money in their pockets despite working just as much as their male counterparts. Witness the true story of how a group of women, who worked at the Ford Motor Company of Dagenham, England, paved the way for the Equal Pay Act for women in 1968.

Women of Color

If you and your friends refuse to be classified into society’s narrow categories or go against what you deem unfair, then add The Help to your list of movies for your viewing party. Watch how different women from distinct backgrounds react to and challenge the prevailing system and tell their story.

Woman of Beauty and Suffering

It is always said that the only person who can truly hinder you from succeeding is yourself. The amazing biopic of Frida, played by Salma Hayek, shows how renowned painter, Frida Kahlo, lived through chronic pain after being pierced with an iron handrail in a bus accident in 1925. While much of the film revolves around her and her relationship with her husband, Diego Rivera, Frida proved that you may break her bones but you cannot crush her spirit.

Gather the girls and celebrate the strength of women in spite of difficult trials that befall them, and remember: when women band together, anything can happen.

What other films can you add to this list? Post your suggestions below!
