About Jennifer Perkins

Jennifer Perkins is an Austin based mom, DIY project designer, blogger, social marketing strategist and Treetopia brand ambassador.

When I was a jewelry designer I specialized in unusual findings in my one of a kind creations. Cracker Jack charms, baby rattles and eyeglasses filled the pages of magazines like Elle Accessories and Marie Claire with my designs. Often when interviewed, I would say that if something would sit still long enough I would eventually find a way to make it wearable. I seem to decorate a Christmas tree with the same attitude.

Size is really the only thing you need to consider when decorating your tree (or making jewelry). When it comes to creative Christmas decorations for your tree, anything can become an ornament as long as it is not too large or too heavy. Even items on the heavier side can occasionally be wired to your tree. I’m not talking decorate a tree for your home gym with dumb bells, though I like the concept.

Quick tips for decorating with heavier ornaments:

  • Try to keep items under 2lbs each. These items won’t weigh down your branches, but several of them will make your tree extra heavy.
  • Consider wiring your tree to the wall, especially if you have small children. I often use zip ties around my trees for just this reason.

Anyone can decorate a Christmas tree, but it takes a special person to make a tree exceptional and inspiring. Treetopia has chosen their favorite holiday tastemakers from all over the blogosphere to be members of their 2014 Treetopia Design Council. These are bloggers with impeccable taste, a keen eye for design and the uncanny ability to decorate a mean Christmas tree. I am honored and thrilled to be working along side such a talented group of designers.

Yummm I can almost smell the carnitas in the slow cooker and the tres leches cake in the oven. That can only mean one thing in my house, Christmas is almost here. Each year for Christmas my family makes a Tex Mex feast. It all started because of some Christmas plates I bought featuring Santa on a burro surrounded by piñatas. From there our Christmas tradition was born. This year with the help of Treetopia I took our theme a step further with a Feliz Navidid tree! I have a big tattoo of a hot pink deer smack in the middle of my left forearm. Some people might say deers are brown. Those same people might also say Christmas trees are green. I say that your tattoos and trees can be any color your little heart desires. Even ombre or rainbow!

Choosing the right color tree for the right room and then of course the right decorations makes all the difference. Just as if you were choosing the perfect throw pillows to match your sofa you should take the same care in choosing a Christmas tree. Match your tree to your decor and you can’t go wrong. Consider further incorporating your tree into the decor with custom ornaments. As with most things, it is all about the details.
