How to Choose the Right Rug for Any RoomPosted by in Home Decorating with Treetopia
If you’re decorating a room from scratch, many designers will tell you to start with the rug. This is great advice because rugs serve a dual purpose: an anchor that will pull together the theme you have in mind and protect your hardwood floors. Below are a few tips on how to select the right rug your home.
Rule of Thumb
An area rug should be a minimum of six inches and no more than two feet away from the wall. Of course, other factors will come into play as you decorate, but keeping this guideline in mind will prevent design faux pas and other headaches.
Size is definitely a major factor in choosing a rug. In the living room, for example, a rug should be big enough so that there’s enough space for the furniture to sit on top—even if it’s just on the edge. Too big or too small, and the rug will look out of place. Remember that once you find the ideal size, the rug will tie together the design for any room.
If the Shoe Fits…
A rug is a fashion statement, one that makes your home—or a room—truly yours. When choosing a rug, make sure that its design and material match your lifestyle and artistic sensibilities. Don’t be afraid to experiment, but try to keep an overall theme in mind so that the design elements complement each other. Rug designer Sigal Sasson of RUG-ART recommends using area rugs with bold patterns to make a room look larger. Avoid covering up the design, however, if you plan to place furniture on it.
Complementary, My Dear Watson
A rug should always play well with the furniture and other décor in the room. Choose one that complements the dominant colors and shapes in the overall design. In the above image, for example, the rug complements the neutral tones of the sofa and lounge chairs. The square shape also provides a pleasant contrast against the round coffee table lounge chair. Take note how the soft furnishing and accessories add pops of color while still keeping the muted, earthy theme.
Different rugs can evoke different atmospheres—their color, shape, or pattern can change the look and feel of an entire room. What’s important is that you stick to what you love, what you’re comfortable with. Get a rug that completes your home décor and you’ll fall in love with your home all over again
