Now that you know where to go, make a list of the items you’re looking for or you’d want to find there. If you haven’t decided on specific items yet or don’t know what you’ll see at the sale, we’re here to help you out! Here’s a list of items commonly found in yard sales and how you can repurpose them:
Decorative Parts and Accessories
Yard sales have a wide variety of items on sale, whether they’re pre-loved items or specially crafted furniture and home décor pieces. You will often find decorative items that are still in good condition but need to be discarded when a home is remodeled or renovated. Some good finds are unique door knockers and big picture frames that are just waiting to be displayed in your own home. You only need to take some time to give these items a quick clean and polish, and they’re good to go.
Bargain furniture is definitely one of the items most seen in big yard sales. Depending on the yard sale you go to, you can find generic or newly built custom-made furniture that can be perfect for your home. Some are pre-owned items that are being sold at a bargain because they have been or will be replaced by the current owners. Classic study/library tables can be turned into your workstation with just a few tweaks to its design.
Rugs and Carpets
Used rugs and carpets in good shape are definitely present in some of the best yard sales. Some of these items remain in mint condition because they were discarded as a result of a recent renovation in which the flooring was changed. Some were just replaced with new ones. A word of caution: make sure to check the item well for damage or unwanted ticks (for fluffy carpets), especially if the previous owner has a pet. If you have a cat, you can cut up the old rug and cover a post with it for an instant scratching post. You’ll definitely hear your cat’s purr of contentment.
You won’t run out of decorative items for any spot in your home in yard sales. Small figurines to be displayed on the shelves or above the fireplace, or snow globes and wall hangings are waiting to be discovered. You can even add a ribbon to small items and turn them into ornaments for your Christmas tree!
Speaking of décor and wall hangings, there are also seasonal décor available in some stalls. From Christmas tree ornaments to wreaths and garlands, and décor for special holidays and parties, there are a lot of unique and fabulous items on sale and waiting to be repurposed or “glammed up.”
If you’re a fan of vintage items, you might just find special collectibles in yard sales. Keep your eyes peeled and you might spot a perfectly working juke box, turntable, or vinyl record you’ve wanted for so long.
Not everything in yard sales is pre-loved. Some sellers take yard sales as an opportunity to showcase their skills and/or talents and sell their beloved creations, so there’s no shame in searching for possible Christmas presents in yard sales. New items range from furniture to housewares and collectibles to other useful miscellaneous items.
You may not be searching for anything in particular but, chances are, you’ll find something that caters to your style. Whatever you’re into, you may find items that are worth taking home at a bargain price. Perhaps you’re in need of a new table and a storage bin right now. If you find a sturdy trunk, purchase that instead and repurpose it to become a storage bin and table in one. Check out our ideas on how to repurpose items into home décor.
Have fun shopping and remember: just because it doesn’t look good at first sight doesn’t mean it’s worthless. You’re a Treetopia reader after all, and we know that you can turn the glum to glam!
