Sensational Snacks from Around the World

Entertaining unexpected visitors can be somewhat troublesome. Many hosts aim to impress with complicated dishes, but this often leaves too little time to actually enjoy their guests’ company. At the same time, guests could be craving more than the usual popcorn and soda. Moroccan Hard-boiled Eggs

This twist on the old-fashioned hard-boiled egg is easy – just slice the egg open and sprinkle with cumin. It’s a Middle Eastern favorite that is sure to please even the most jaded of appetites, and the cumin helps with your digestion too!

German Sandwiches

This European take on the traditional open-faced sandwich is made of a slice of bread, a dollop of cream cheese, and thinly sliced cucumbers. Run a rolling pin over the bread or use soda crackers for extra thinness. It’s a snack that can also double as a cocktail canape.

Hawaiian Musubi

Because Hawaii is a melting pot of food cultures, nothing shouts “Aloha!” louder than this Americanized version of sushi. All you need is a block of sticky rice, some pan-fried Spam, and Japanese dried seaweed to wrap it all in. Your guests will find themselves asking, “Why didn’t I think of this before?”

Norwegian Prawns

Popular among Scandinavians, prawns require just a small amount of preparation to make them really enjoyable. All you have to peel them and squeeze some lemon juice on top, then serve them in a sandwich. This snack goes well with some chilled white wine.

Chinese Toffee Bananas

These caramelized beauties are relatively easy to prepare compared to other Chinese dishes. Dip banana slices in batter, deep-fry them until they’re golden-brown, dip in a sugar glaze, and dunk in cold water. Serve them quickly on wax paper while the banana is still hot and the sugar glaze is brittle. Sprinkle on some sesame seeds for added flavor.

Japanese Edamame

Take some fresh green soybeans, rub them with a sprinkle of salt, boil in water until softened, then drain. Spread the soybeans on a tray to cool before serving. This snack won’t take too much time – around 15 minutes is enough – and the combination of the salt and the flavor of the beans is downright tasty.

Nigerian Chin-chin

This simple snack is simple to make and can be kept in a tight container for days. Mix some flour with white sugar, a dash of nutmeg, and butter, then fold in an egg and a tablespoon of milk. Knead the mixture until it forms a dough. Cut up the dough into bite-sized pieces and deep-fry until golden brown. Enjoy these crunchy fritters with tea or coffee.

Mexican Paletas

Unlike the other snacks listed above, these popsicles need to be done way in advance. Mix milk, vanilla, sugar, water, and the fruit of your choice in a blender. Pour into popsicle molds, insert the sticks, and let them freeze solid overnight. You can also try a cucumber-chili variation with seeded cucumber, jalapeno pepper, and lemon juice for a refreshing kick.

    T / i have been going with all the fruits that are in seosan..watermelon, cherries( my fav), peaches, plums, etc popcorn when plain is about 30 calories for one cup popped! i add spray butter to it and some salt( spray butter is just a soy substitute)..when i want something sweet indiana popcorn sells small bags of their all natural kettlecorn. 1 bag = 92 calories, and 3.5 grams of fat ..its delish!i have not made this in some time ..but two low fat gram crackers with fat free cool wipe sandwiched in between then put in the freezer great sub for and ice cream sammie..not sure about calories, but its a lot less then ice cream and will satisfy that cold treat you might be craving happy summer!!
